By Matthieu Blazy
At Chanel, the past is never really the past. It is a vocabulary—tweed, pearls, quilted bags, two-tone shoes, tailored jackets and the unmistakable interlocking CC—that each creative director must reinterpret for a new generation. For Spring 2027, Matthieu Blazy takes that vocabulary and gives it movement, sensuality and a striking new sense of freedom.
Presented at the Grand Palais during Paris Fashion Week, the Chanel Spring 2027 Ready-to-Wear collection marked another significant chapter in Blazy’s evolving vision for the house. One year into his tenure as Chanel’s artistic director, the designer continues to loosen the rules surrounding the legendary Parisian maison, transforming familiar codes into something younger, more spontaneous and unexpectedly provocative.
The result is a collection that feels unmistakably Chanel while refusing to be trapped by the Chanel of the past.
Chanel’s New Freedom
Blazy’s Chanel is increasingly about liberation.
For Spring 2027, the designer explored the contrast between restraint and release, moving from the formality historically associated with the Chanel suit toward clothes that feel lighter, freer and more sensual. Traditional tailoring was softened, while eveningwear became more fluid and revealing.
The collection included sheer skirt suits, cropped jackets, fluid dresses, pleated miniskirts, lingerie-inspired pieces and masculine tailoring. The body was frequently exposed through transparent fabrics, open jackets and abbreviated silhouettes, creating a tension between Chanel’s disciplined heritage and a distinctly contemporary sensuality.
Rather than abandoning Chanel’s codes, Blazy seems interested in asking how far they can stretch.
That question becomes particularly interesting with tweed.
The Tweed Suit Gets a New Attitude
Few materials are more closely associated with Chanel than tweed. For decades, the fabric has represented the house’s particular combination of Parisian elegance, practicality and aristocratic polish.
Blazy refuses to leave it untouched.
For Spring 2027, tweed became softer, more flexible and more dynamic. One of the collection’s notable innovations was a version of “smocked tweed” that offered the visual authority of Chanel tailoring while moving with the body more like sportswear.
Other versions appeared in enlarged windowpane patterns, mesh combinations and bold tiger-print treatments.
The effect was particularly powerful because it challenged the expectation that a Chanel suit must look perfectly composed. Here, jackets could appear raw-edged, skirts could move freely and traditional structure could dissolve into something more relaxed.
The Chanel suit was still there. It simply had a new attitude.
Sheer Chanel and the Liberated Body
Transparency became one of the strongest themes of the Spring 2027 collection.
Sheer cream and black fabrics appeared in skirt suits embroidered with flowers and beads, revealing glimpses of skin beneath traditionally formal silhouettes. Other looks paired transparent elements with tailoring, creating a balance between modesty and exposure.
This approach gave Chanel’s classic sophistication a distinctly modern sensuality.
Blazy’s treatment of transparency is less about shock for its own sake and more about changing the relationship between the garment and the body. Instead of using clothing to conceal the silhouette, the collection allows the body to become part of the design.
The result is Chanel at its most liberated.
Tiger Print Takes Over
If tweed represented Chanel’s heritage, animal print represented its wild side.
Red-and-white tiger-print tweed was among the collection’s most immediately striking statements. The traditionally refined Chanel jacket suddenly became louder, more graphic and almost rebellious.
Animal prints also appeared through accessories and footwear, including leopard- and tiger-print interpretations of Chanel’s iconic two-tone pumps.
The house’s familiar accessories therefore became another opportunity for Blazy to introduce energy and unpredictability.
This was not the quiet luxury Chanel of minimal beige and restrained black.
It was Chanel with claws.
Cropped Jackets and Mini Skirts
Proportion played an important role throughout the collection.
Classic jackets were cropped to reveal the midriff, while skirts were shortened into pleated minis. Elsewhere, skirts were divided into swinging panels, creating movement as models walked through the Grand Palais.
These abbreviated proportions gave Chanel’s tailoring a youthful energy.
The cropped jacket, in particular, felt like an important bridge between the house’s past and present. Chanel’s structured jackets have always been among its strongest signatures, but Blazy removes some of their formality by raising the hem and pairing them with shorter skirts.
The result feels less like traditional suiting and more like a modern wardrobe built around Chanel’s DNA.
Masculine Tailoring Meets Feminine Fluidity
Another defining element of Spring 2027 was the dialogue between masculine and feminine dressing.
Blazy placed masculine tailoring alongside fluid dresses, lingerie references and exposed skin. The contrast gave the collection much of its personality.
A sharply constructed jacket could appear beside a delicate, transparent skirt. A traditionally masculine silhouette could be followed by a soft evening dress. The tension between these opposites made the collection feel dynamic rather than nostalgic.
This duality is central to Chanel’s history. Gabrielle Chanel famously challenged conventional ideas about women’s clothing by borrowing elements from menswear and turning them into something distinctly feminine.
Blazy continues that conversation for a new generation.
Eveningwear in Motion
Eveningwear brought another dimension to the collection.
Rather than treating formal dressing as rigid or overly elaborate, Blazy allowed evening pieces to move, float and reveal the body. Some dresses appeared almost cloud-like, while others incorporated shimmering details and fluid layers.
Embellishment appeared through metallic beading, floral embroidery and glittering finishes.
There was also a sense of theatricality without excessive heaviness. The clothes were designed to move with the wearer rather than overwhelm her.
That emphasis on movement is one of the collection’s most modern qualities.
Accessories: The Chanel Codes Remain
Accessories provided some of the clearest connections to Chanel’s heritage.
The iconic two-tone pump returned in fresh iterations, including leopard and tiger versions with contrasting cream toes. Other shoes appeared in combinations of baby blue and silver, while chunky sandals featured oversized gold interlocking CC details.
The handbags were equally expressive.
Chanel’s signature quilted bags appeared in black, burgundy and white, alongside more adventurous versions incorporating zebra stripes and contrasting primary colors.
Perhaps the most symbolic accessory moment came at the end of the show, when model Dyanira Hurbuscher carried Gabrielle Chanel’s original 2.55 handbag. The archival piece connected Blazy’s forward-looking collection directly to the founder herself.
It was a fitting reminder that innovation at Chanel does not require forgetting the past.
A Dramatic Grand Palais Setting
The presentation itself reinforced the collection’s sense of freedom and fantasy.
The Grand Palais was transformed with a giant moon, illuminated birds and a reflective orange-and-green floor, creating an almost otherworldly environment for the collection.
The theatrical setting added another layer to Blazy’s message.
There was something deliberately joyful about the presentation. Rather than making Chanel feel distant or overly precious, the atmosphere suggested a house willing to play again.
That sense of joy has become increasingly important to Blazy’s interpretation of Chanel. His approach is not about stripping the brand of its heritage, but about rediscovering the playful, sensual and unconventional spirit within it.
The Celebrities at Chanel
As expected, Chanel’s Spring 2027 show attracted a major front row.
Dua Lipa, Nicole Kidman and Pedro Pascal were among the high-profile guests at the Grand Palais, adding considerable star power to the presentation.
But the celebrity presence was ultimately secondary to the collection itself.
Blazy’s Chanel is becoming interesting because the clothes are beginning to generate their own conversation. The designer is creating a version of the house that can appeal to established Chanel clients while also attracting younger consumers looking for something less predictable.
Chanel Spring 2027 Is About Reinvention
The most compelling aspect of Chanel Spring 2027 is the way Matthieu Blazy balances familiarity with disruption.
You can recognize Chanel immediately: the tweed, the quilted bags, the two-tone shoes, the tailored jackets and the CC logo are all present.
But none of them feel completely frozen in their traditional forms.
Tweed stretches.
Suits become sheer.
Jackets become cropped.
Skirts become shorter and more fluid.
Animal prints become louder.
Handbags become more playful.
Even the famous Chanel codes seem to be moving.
That is perhaps the clearest sign of Blazy’s growing influence at the house.
The Verdict
Chanel Spring 2027 Ready-to-Wear is a confident continuation of Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel.
Rather than attempting to reinvent the house through radical separation from its history, Blazy is doing something more difficult: he is changing the way Chanel’s established codes behave.
The tweed suit can be sporty. The evening dress can be weightless. The classic pump can become animal print. The quilted handbag can clash with bright colors. Tailoring can reveal the body rather than conceal it.
And through all of it, Chanel remains Chanel.
The collection feels youthful without trying too hard to be young, sensual without losing sophistication, and experimental without abandoning the house’s identity.
For Spring 2027, Matthieu Blazy is not simply looking backward at Gabrielle Chanel’s legacy. He is asking what that legacy can become next.
And the answer is wonderfully unpredictable.
Chanel Spring 2027 Ready-to-Wear is fashion heritage set free.
